How Apple Will Name The Next Generation iPad
It has been only a month since we saw the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus for the first time, but just in few days, Apple is going to unveil the next generation iPads. Considering the fact that the new iPhones got the new names, I wanted to share with you my thoughts about how Apple might name the next generation of its tablet computers.
The end for non-Retina displays
Right now Apple is selling four versions of iPad: iPad Air, iPad with Retina display, iPad mini with Retina display and iPad mini. The only iPad that is not equipped with a Retina display is 2 years old iPad mini, which is certainly destined to be discontinued in coming weeks.
That will mean that as long as Apple do not release a new version of iPad with a 4 years old screen resolution (which will be ridiculous if it happens), coming next month all the iPads will have Retina or Retina HD displays. In other words, I think that 'Retina display' will completely disappear from the naming of iPads.
How many iPads will Apple release?
There is another very important question: how many screen size options will iPad have? There were a lot of rumours saying that Apple is going to discontinue the 7.9-inch size iPad mini, with the main argument for that is that huge 5.5 inch iPhone 6 Plus is basically iPad mini with an ability to make phone calls.
As a previous iPad mini user, I have to admit that I agree with that argument. I expect Apple to focus on further development of the iPads with bigger screen sizes, but I don't believe that Apple will completely discontinue the iPad mini this October. At the same time, I won't be surprised if iPad mini will get just a simple specs upgrade or will not receive any updates at all.
There are also a lot of speculations regarding the possible release of 12.9-inch iPad with an expected release date somewhere in 2015. I don't know if I will personally want to buy an iPad that big, because I am sure I will still need my MacBook Pro for tasks tablets will never be able to do, but I think that a huge multitouch screen will certainly help to improve the productivity of corporate customers that use iPads for the business purposes, or users who have the iPad as their only computer.
Air, Mini, Plus, Pro...
Last September, Apple has adapted the new naming system for its iPhone line-up, with a bigger size iPhone 6 getting an additional 'Plus' tag. It is possible that Apple is going to do the same to iPads, and we will see iPad 6 and iPad 6 Plus. There are also a possibility that Apple will debut the 'Pro' naming in its iPad line-up, but it looks highly unlikely.
Fortunately, there is just a few days of waiting left until the iPad event, which will show us what Apple is going to do to its iPad line-up. The event is scheduled for October 16th, and Apple has announced today that there will be a live stream on Apple.com for anybody who wants to watch the upcoming event live.
How Apple should name the next generation of iPads? Do you think Apple should discontinue the iPad mini in favour of iPhone 6 Plus? Feel free to share your opinion in the comment section below.
